03/25/2007: Our next general membership meeting will be held on
Sunday, March 25th, 2007 at Century Sportsman's Club on Rochdale St. in
Auburn, MA. This is a very important meeting for all to attend because
we will be awarding for the first time in the history of the Bay State
Trappers and the Massachusetts Trappers Association the Honorary
Lifetime Membership Award to Tom and Irene Hayes. Also, there will be a
pot-luck luncheon to follow the meeting and awards presentation. It's
$5.00 to eat, $3.00 if you bring a dish to share! We'll be raffling off
a couple of goodies, and a 50/50 raffle, and we'll be discussing dates
for a spring fishing derby hopefully to be held on Webster Lake, dates
for the 2007 and 2008 Fall Outings, Donations to be made to states that
are facing pivotal legal battles, and ways to get the youth of the
state more involved in trapping. Sadly, I won't be able to be there as
that's my mother's birthday weekend, and I'll be out of town with the
family, but Malcolm will be bringing some beaver stew, and I know you
all will be on your best behavior in my absence. Have fun!-- Elizabeth
01/10/2007: Most of you have gotten a phone call or message from me with regards to this, but for those of you who haven't, here ya go.
On
January 10th, at 7 PM at 120 Prescott St in the Board of Health
building there is going to be a meeting. PETA, and minions, are
expected to make a presentation and protest with regards to heavier
restrictions on beaver trapping, and 10-day emergency permits. Heavier=
None at all.
All trappers, from the central region especially,
are encouraged to attend and show support for your conservation
activities, and to help voice your concern for the proper management of
our habitat.
I'm going to post directions on the Mass Trappers
website as well as this information. Colleen Olfenbuttel and Bill Davis
are expected to attend with some videos, and I'm bringing the
Destroying the Myth Video. They are going to set us up with a TV and
VCR.
All laws were followed with regards to the West Boylston
Setting, but apparently PETA has been waiting for just the right time
to launch this attack. With the quote in the David Black article of
towns giving out these permits willy nilly without concern for
regulation, the illegal traps in Barre mangling dogs, and the 'lips
ripping off when the traps freeze which is why conibears are more
humane than box traps' in the most recent article on the West Boylston
job, they have leapt on this and have issued a National Alert which has
resulted in the Board of Health getting calls from as far as Hawaii.
Massachusetts,
New York and Connecticut were the focus for 2007 as it was, so this was
to be expected. Definitely some damage control has to be done, but all
trappers are encouraged to please please please contact me prior to
speaking with reporters about any jobs that you do, so that perhaps we
can discuss a few little items that might be best not mentioned
(methods of dispatch, injuries sustained to animals, permit issuance,
etc).
Also, if you plan on attending on the 10th, remember what
this is for. You are representing the trapping community. Association
business is not going to be discussed at this meeting, only the benefit
regulated trapping offers. So any political ire or problems, please
check them at the door, as we need to be unified in there.
