REQUEST FOR FISHER TISSUE SAMPLES - RESEARCH PROJECT

To: Massachusetts Trappers

For the next two trapping seasons, I would like to be able to collect tissue samples from fishers located in the eastern portion of the state, specifically east of the I-495 loop around Boston. Samples along the cape would also be valuable. Tissue samples could include tongue, liver, or muscle.  Tissue samples can be kept from each fisher in a separate plastic baggy and placed in the freezer. It is important to label each tissue sample separately and identify as precisely as possible, the geographic locations where the animals were caught.  Each sample will eventually have a set of geographic coordinates associated with it.

The tissue samples will be used in a genetic analysis of fishers in the eastern part of the state. The long term goal is to examine the genetic structure and population dynamics of fishers in an urban landscape. Fishers have moved into the urban landscapes of the northeast which may necessitate a re-analysis of the habitat requirements that are suitable for their success. Preliminary work will involve a genetic analysis which includes a comparison of relatedness values between fishers in urban vs. rural settings.

Please submit all fisher samples to Laura Hajduk at the Westboro Field Headquarters Office or to your local district office.

Your assistance with the collection of the tissue samples is greatly appreciated and you are welcome to contact me with any questions.
