River otters are able to be trapped from November 1st through December 15th. River otters are probably the most aquatic members of the weasel family. They are nocturnal (most active at night), however it is not uncommon to see them out during the day in search for food, or investigating changes in their aquatic habitat. They den underground, and can reach a length up to 4 feet. They can weigh between 44 and 82 pounds, and while awkward on land, they are amazingly graceful swimmers. Otter pelts maintain good demand in the fur market, pales finding particular favor in China. They are strict carnivores, eating invertebrates, fish, frogs and small mammals.
